Storybox Playlist: Stories of the Winter Solstice
Winter Solstice. It's one of my favorite days of the year. The sun is so low in the sky it feels like late afternoon at 10:00 in the morning. The light is golden all day long and the night comes so early. There is a special magic in the air, foretelling a turn of the tide that might occur at any moment — and when you pass the tipping point, the light will start to come back again. In ancient times, some people believed the sun was a ball that would roll away from the earth as winter approached; if they didn't light fires, the sun wouldn't know where to roll back to. We know now that the story is quite different, but the feeling is still the same and so we celebrate with food and bonfires and lots of light.
