Storybox Playlist: Happy Winter Celebrations!
December 17, 2018
With the winter solstice on Friday and Christmas next Tuesday, our upcoming week could not be more exciting in our household. Here at Sparkle, we thought it would be a great time to share with all of you some of our best winter celebrations stories. Winter is a special time of gathering, storytelling, feasting, playing in the snow, and bringing light to darkness.
The Shortest Day (from the At Home with Martin & Sylvia Series)
Where Martin and Sylvia live, the nights are getting longer and the days are getting shorter. When Momma suggests they spend more time outside with the sun, brother and sister decide to invite the daylight into all their play. They go sledding, build fairy houses, do farm chores, and build a bonfire all with an eye on the sun — celebrating its shortest day of the year.
A Night for Stories (from the Martin & Sylvia: More Adventures! Series)
One late afternoon, when Martin expresses his frustration about how the days get so short this time of year, Daddy tells brother and sister about how it is considered the storytelling time of year. He suggests that they spend the evening together telling stories and everyone gets excited. He says that stories almost always bring magic — but that evening, the magic surprises even Daddy.
Martin & Sylvia's Festival of Lights (from the Martin & Sylvia Series)
Martin and Sylvia’s town center holds many festive events throughout the year. During December, there are several town traditions including a “Festival of Lights,” where the shopkeepers decorate their storefronts in lights. When Martin learns that Hanukkah is also called the Festival of Lights, he begins to discover the similarities between all the festivals and holidays that take place during this time of year. And he and Sylvia are inspired to create a festival of their very own.
Light in the Wilderness (from the So Many Fairies Series)
Star is a house-cat with a wild side. And one day in the middle of a snowstorm, Star’s wildness gets him lost in the forest. Luckily, a dedicated fairy who loves Star engages the natural world to help him find his way back home.
The Middle of the Night (from the By Thisle by Thimble Series)
Willow Fielding loves to camp — but she hasn't always loved it. She was once afraid of the woods and then, when she was eight years old, her grandfather introduced her to a barred owl named Lucy. "Like the girl in the stories who brought light during dark times," said her grandfather. After that point, the woods became a magical place for her — and years later, when she was caught in a storm, that magic returned and brought a special light to a very dark night.
