Sparkle Kitchen: Cozy Winter Recipes Round-up
For many of you in the eastern half of the US, the weather has been mighty cold. Winter is in full swing and the snow is deep in many places across the country. We thought we'd inspire you to keep warm with some cozy winter recipes that will warm up not only your kitchens but your stomachs and hearts, too. Who knows? One of these recipes may become a new winter favorite for your family.
Hot Chocolate on a Stick
Let's start with a nice warm drink, shall we? These single-serving hot-chocolates-on-a-stick make it super easy for kids to help make a warm drink after coming inside from playing in the snow or walking home from the bus stop in the cold. I think most grown-ups will love them too!
Gumbo
This super-hearty dish will warm everyone in your family! It's a southern style stew that will keep you going through the coldest days.
Homemade Drop Biscuits
These easy drop biscuits are light and fluffy and quick to make. The kids can help too. Make an extra batch and have them on hand for a comforting breakfast or snack — or serve then with any of the stews in this cozy winter recipe round-up.
Orange-Glazed Sweet Rolls
Nothing says "cozy" like a warm sweet roll on a cold snowy morning. These have a light citrus glaze that will wake up your senses and warm your belly. Start the night before to get a head start in the morning.
Polenta
For Italians, polenta is a quintessential winter comfort food. In our house, we invite lots of friends over for what is called a "polentata" — essentially a "polenta party." We make a large dutch oven's worth of polenta and ask everyone to bring a sauce or topping. Polenta is awesome the next day as a quick leftover, as well.
Turkey Shepherd's Pie
Shepherd's Pie is a comfort food from my childhood. I remember my grandmother making it for us as a thrifty way of using up leftovers — but I doubt there will be any leftovers of this tasty dish. Make a double batch if you can!
Risgrøt
I suggest making this on a slow, chilly morning, when you can enjoy lingering by a warm stove as you stir. Cup your bowl in your hands and enjoy the soothing scents before you eat.
Campfire Stew
Stew is comfort food — bottom line. Our ancestors have been making hearty stews to keep warm through cold days for as long as there has been fire to cook over. This stew is no different. Served with cornbread, biscuits, or rye bread, it will warm you from your head to your toes.
Skirlie
“Skirlie,” or savory Scottish oatmeal, makes a stick-to-your-ribs meal for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
